EV Charging in Manchester: What You Need to Know
Manchester is one of the fastest-growing EV markets in the North West. With the Clean Air Zone initiatives and growing EV adoption, home charging has become increasingly important for Manchester residents. Whether you're in a Victorian terrace in Didsbury, a modern apartment in Salford Quays, or a semi-detached home in Stockport, this guide covers everything you need.
Manchester benefits from competitive installation costs (at or slightly below the national average) and a growing number of OZEV-certified installers serving the Greater Manchester area.

Manchester residents can access the same national grant schemes as the rest of the UK. You may be eligible for the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant (up to £500, raised in April 2026) if you:
- Rent your home, of any type, and have the landlord’s written permission
- Own and live in a flat or maisonette
In both cases the property needs off-street parking for your own use — a driveway, a garage or a bay allocated to your home. Communal or visitor spaces that anyone can park in do not count. Owner-occupiers of houses and bungalows were taken out of this scheme in April 2022.
If you have no off-street parking at all, the scheme to look at is the separate cross-pavement grant, which funds a channel across the footway to a chargepoint at your own property. It is open to owners and renters alike, but it depends on your council running a scheme and granting permission. See our UK EV charger grants guide for both routes.

Manchester-Specific Considerations
Victorian & Edwardian Properties
Manchester has many Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses. These properties may have older consumer units that need upgrading, and the distance from the consumer unit to the parking area can add to installation costs. A consumer unit upgrade typically adds £400–£700.
Apartments & New Builds
Salford Quays, Ancoats, and the city centre have seen significant apartment development. Many newer buildings have EV-ready infrastructure, making installation simpler and cheaper. Older converted warehouse apartments may require more complex cable routing.
On-Street Parking
If you rely on on-street parking, Manchester City Council has been expanding public charging infrastructure through the LEVI fund. Check the council website for charge point locations and any planned installations in your area.
Frequently Asked Questions
The charger costs the same wherever you live. The fitting doesn't. Birmingham runs £170–£260 a day, near enough Manchester's £180–£280, while London sits well above both at £250–£400.
